I recently had an experience that highlighted the disconnect between phonetics and spelling. My partner asked me to spell a word I was struggling to pronounce, and I realised that my phonetic understanding didn't translate directly to correct spelling.

As someone born profoundly deaf, I use a hearing device that doesn't fully restore my hearing. I learned to speak using phonetics, which focuses on sounds rather than spelling. This experience inspired me to collaborate with a colleague, Andrew Sargison to develop the SyllaSpeech app.

SyllaSpeech bridges the gap between phonetics and spelling by splitting words into syllables and highlighting stressed syllables, making pronunciation easier.

For example, "pronunciation" is phonetically "prə-ˌnən(t)-sē-ˈā-shən" but is syllabically "pro-nun-ci-a-tion" (in UK English), which is simpler to read and learn.

The app is available for download on Android and Apple devices.

It's a valuable tool for mastering pronunciation and syllable emphasis, whether you're learning a new language, refining your speech, or simply seeking clearer communication.

SyllaSpeech offers a range of features, including:

  • Instant Syllabification: Users can input any word and SyllaSpeech will instantly break it down into syllables, highlighting the stressed syllable.

  • Interactive Visualisation: The app presents a visual representation of the syllable structure, aiding in understanding the word's pronunciation.

  • Audio Pronunciation: SyllaSpeech offers clear audio pronunciation of each syllable, allowing users to practise along with the app.

  • Personalised Learning: Users can create customised word lists based on their specific challenges, focusing on areas where they require extra practice.

  • Multilingual Support: SyllaSpeech supports multiple languages. Simply select your preferred language from the drop-down menu in the top right corner of the app.
